One week after a disappointing performance in Nov\u00e9 M\u011bsto, I arrived in Cheile Gr\u0103di\u0219tei<\/strong>, Romania, with only one thing on my mind: bouncing back.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Nestled in the Carpathian Mountains, Cheile Gr\u0103di\u0219tei is one of Romania’s premier winter sports resorts. Better known to many as the venue that hosted the European Mountain Bike Championships<\/strong> (2024), it has become a regular stop on the international MTB calendar. Fast, demanding and spectacular, it was the perfect place to reset the season.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Beyond the race itself, this was an important weekend for the UCI rankings.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Only the top 15 riders<\/strong> would score precious UCI points, attracting a strong international field. National teams from Romania, Hungary, Ukraine, T\u00fcrkiye and Spain<\/strong> all made the trip with the same objective.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Based on the UCI ranking of the riders present, I was called up 10th on the starting grid<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n After my recent World Cup performance in Korea and considering the strength of the field, I knew that a Top 5 finish would already be a very successful day<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n The course itself looked fantastic: fast, flowing, physical and enjoyable to ride. Whatever the outcome, I knew I would enjoy racing here.<\/p>\n\n\n\n After several days of practice in dry conditions, the weather played the same trick it had all season.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Rain arrived just before race day.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Unlike previous races, I decided to trust my initial setup and kept my Schwalbe Rick<\/strong> tires mounted on my UNNO Horn<\/strong>. It was a calculated gamble. The course remained relatively fast despite the rain, and I believed the lower rolling resistance would outweigh the loss of grip.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Time to find out.<\/p>\n\n\n\n As expected, Switzerland’s Julien Bard<\/strong>, my favourite for the victory, immediately took control of the race.<\/p>\n\n\n\n The pace was brutal.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Well positioned after the opening climb, I joined a group of five riders trying to stay within striking distance.<\/p>\n\n\n\n It didn’t take long to realise that Bard was simply on another level.<\/p>\n\n\n\n By the second lap, the race for victory was virtually over.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Instead, a new battle emerged.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Together with Ukrainian champion Oleksandr Obukhivskyi<\/strong> and Bulgarian champion Viktor Enev<\/strong>, we formed a trio fighting for the remaining podium positions.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Lap after lap, Viktor Enev and I kept increasing the pace, hoping to distance the Ukrainian rider and secure at least a podium finish.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Then everything changed.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Halfway through the race, the local favourite and Romanian national champion Aron…<\/strong> came charging back from behind with incredible speed.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Without hesitation, he launched a powerful attack.<\/p>\n\n\n\n I couldn’t match his acceleration.<\/p>\n\n\n\n But instead of panicking, I focused on limiting the damage.<\/p>\n\n\n\n More importantly, the surge was enough to finally drop Viktor Enev, leaving only Aron ahead of me.<\/p>\n\n\n\n One lap later, luck also turned in my favour as Enev suffered a puncture, effectively ending his podium chances.<\/p>\n\n\n\n From that point on, the strategy became simple.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Ride smart.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Stay smooth.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Avoid mistakes.<\/p>\n\n\n\n On a course that had become increasingly slippery, punctures and crashes were becoming more frequent.<\/p>\n\n\n\n There was no reason to take unnecessary risks.<\/p>\n\n\n\n A UCI podium\u2014especially in a European Cup\u2014isn’t something that happens every weekend.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Sometimes, the smartest race is simply bringing it home.<\/p>\n\n\n\n As expected, Julien Bard<\/strong> claimed a dominant victory, confirming the role of pre-race favourite.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Behind him, local champion Aron<\/strong> secured second place in front of his home crowd.<\/p>\n\n\n\n And for the first time in my career…<\/p>\n\n\n\n I stepped onto a UCI podium.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n Third place.<\/p>\n\n\n\n A result that means far more than the trophy itself.<\/p>\n\n\n\n After the disappointment of Nov\u00e9 M\u011bsto, it confirms that the work is paying off.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Even better, thanks to consistent performances throughout the season, I now move up to 5th overall in the European Cup ranking<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n The season is still long.<\/p>\n\n\n\n But this podium feels like an important milestone.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Not the finish line.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Just another step in the right direction.<\/p>\n\n\n\n <\/p>","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":" Some races are about redemption.
