And others that leave a mark before they\u2019ve even begun.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">On April 26th, 2026, it all starts in Rendeux. Bags are packed, bikes carefully boxed, and in our minds, we\u2019re already heading to the other side of the world. Destination: Charles de Gaulle Airport, then a long-haul flight with Asiana Airlines to Incheon \u2014 South Korea\u2019s ultra-modern gateway, set between the sea and the skyline just west of Seoul.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">When we land, everything shifts. It\u2019s bigger, faster, smoother. But this is only a transition. The real journey lies further east, deep in the mountains.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">That first night in Incheon feels strange \u2014 a mix of fatigue, excitement, and reunions. Leo Lounela, Sivert Ekroll, Harry Doye, Noelle Buri, Sara Cortinovis\u2026 the full team is finally together. The tone is set: this won\u2019t be just another trip.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Stepping into history \u2013 Pyeongchang<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">On April 28th, we leave the coast behind and head toward <strong>Pyeongchang<\/strong>, in the heart of Gangwon Province. The scenery gradually shifts \u2014 skyscrapers fade into mountains, highways into winding roads. We\u2019re entering a different Korea.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">And not just any place.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Pyeongchang still echoes through the world of sport. It hosted the <strong>2018 Winter Olympic Games<\/strong>, where some of the most iconic performances took place. Very quickly, it becomes clear: we\u2019re not riding in an ordinary place.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">First training session \u2014 37 km.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">But no dirt yet, no race track. We head out <strong>on the road<\/strong>, discovering the surroundings at our own rhythm. And even there, the immersion is striking.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">We pass beneath the Alpensia ski jump, where Kamil Stoch soared to Olympic gold. A bit further, the bobsleigh track \u2014 silent now, but once dominated by Francesco Friedrich. The legs are turning, but the eyes are working just as much.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">We\u2019re not sightseeing. We\u2019re absorbing it.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Our base camp, <strong>Iwant Resort<\/strong>, sits directly across from the bobsleigh track, just 2 km from the race venue. The kind of place where you open the curtains in the morning to an Olympic view.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Getting lost to understand<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The next day follows the same rhythm.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">65 km. <strong>Still on the road.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The Korean mountains reveal themselves differently: long, steady climbs, fast descents, smooth asphalt. It\u2019s fluid. Almost peaceful.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">No technical challenges yet. Just volume. Flow. Letting the body reconnect after the long journey.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Tires humming on the tarmac. Breathing settling into rhythm.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">These are the moments where a team truly comes together.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>A different kind of course<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Thursday \u2014 finally, we leave the road.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The course opens.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">And everything changes.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">From the first lap, the sensations are different. Back on dirt, feeling the grip, the effort, the constant need to push.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">This isn\u2019t the highly technical, tricky course you might expect from a World Cup. Instead, it\u2019s physical. Relentless. There are few technical sections, but no real place to recover.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">One feature stands out: a <strong>drop of around two meters<\/strong>. Not extreme, but enough to demand commitment, especially at race pace.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">On the bike, the <strong>UNNO Horn<\/strong> feels perfectly suited \u2014 responsive, efficient, built for this kind of effort-driven course.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The <strong>RockShox Flight Attendant suspension<\/strong> proves invaluable. It constantly adapts \u2014 firm when pushing hard, instantly opening when the terrain demands it. On a course like this, that subtle efficiency becomes a real advantage.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">For tires, the choice is clear: <strong>Schwalbe Rick<\/strong>. Fast, efficient, perfect for the dry and hard-packed conditions.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cTypical of Asian races,\u201d my Japanese teammate tells me.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">So this is it. A different racing philosophy. A different approach.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">But already, something is shifting: the weather.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>The calm before the storm<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Friday \u2014 XCC day.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The pace is intense. Fast. Nervous.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Sivert delivers a strong 7th place. Sara fights for a solid 17th. Others push through crashes and setbacks. Leo goes down but gets back up. The team shows resilience.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">As for me \u2014 41st in the rankings. Just outside the cut. Frustrating, but clear.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">So I adapt. I ride. I observe. I learn.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The course starts to feel familiar.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Or at least, that\u2019s what we think.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>When everything shifts<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Saturday.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Final training. Final adjustments.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">And then, the illusion breaks.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The rain arrives.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Not a passing shower \u2014 heavy, relentless rain. The kind that transforms everything.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The course changes completely. Grip disappears. Lines vanish.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The decision is immediate: we switch from <strong>Schwalbe Rick<\/strong> to <strong>Schwalbe Rocket Ron<\/strong>. More aggressive, better suited for the now muddy, unpredictable terrain.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">What we had learned\u2026 no longer applies.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">We hand over the bikes to the mechanics. Michael Vandermeulen, as precise and reliable as ever. Dom Geoghegan joins to support.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">From here on, control fades.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>The sound of rain<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Sunday morning.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">We wake up to it.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Rain. Constant. Deep. Unavoidable.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Dom heads out early to check the course. When he comes back, we don\u2019t need many words.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cIt\u2019s a mess.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">And that\u2019s exactly what it is.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The race becomes a battle of adaptation. Every corner is different. Every climb is a struggle. Every descent a risk.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The bike moves beneath you. Tires grip\u2026 then slip. Suspension works non-stop.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">You\u2019re no longer riding the course.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">You\u2019re surviving it.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Already leaving<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">And then, almost abruptly, it\u2019s over.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">No time to process. We pack up. Bikes, bags, everything.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Bus back to Incheon.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">One last night.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Then a 14-hour flight back to Paris.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>What remains<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">This wasn\u2019t just a race.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">It was a transition.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">From road to dirt. From control to adaptation. From dry speed to unpredictable chaos.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Pyeongchang gave us all of that.
